Margaret C. Tabak brings more than 25 years of professional experience to her practice in matrimonial and family law. She is graduate of Albany Law School (1987) and a cum laude graduate of the University at Albany (1983). Prior to graduating law school, she held various positions with the State Senate and Attorney General’s office. After graduation, Margaret was hired as an associate for the Schenectady law firm Friedman, Hirschen & Miller. In her five years at the firm, she focused on defense and negligence cases in state and federal court and became the primary attorney for the firm’s matrimonial and family law cases. Margaret began her own legal practice in 1993, and worked as a part-time associate for Englert, Stillman, Coffey & McHugh. With her own practice thriving, Margaret opened up her own office in Guilderland in 1995. Margaret’s practice continues to grow and she maintains a reputation throughout the Capital District as an attorney dedicated to her clients and the pursuit of justice.
Margaret is admitted to the United States Supreme Court (1996), the United States District Court, Northern District of New York (1988) and New York State, Appellate Division, Third Department (1988). She is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the Capital District Women’s Bar Association (CDWBA), the New York State Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, the Schenectady County Bar Association, and the Albany County Bar Association. She has served in various leadership positions in those organizations, including as CDWBA President (1999-2000).
An advocate of accessible legal representation for low-income individuals, Margaret received the Legal Project’s Stanley A. Rosen Memorial Award (2005) and the Capital District Women’s Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award (2006) for her career-long efforts in pro bono legal work.
Additionally, Margaret has taught courses for the Knowledge Network and has lectured for various groups and media outlets in the areas of matrimonial and family law.
Margaret is an active member of B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation and has served as its Treasurer for several years. She resides in Guilderland with her husband, David, and children, Hugh and Victoria. As a parent Margaret is honored to be a chorus, band, dance, and soccer Mom! Recognizing the importance of work and family not just for herself but her staff, Tabak & Kiosse is honored to be the recipient of the 2013 Carol S. Knox Family Friendly Employer Award.
